MOT Test Extension & How To Check Your Vehicle Is ‘Safe To Drive’

The Latest Guidelines On Your MOT

The 6 month MOT extension will end on 1st August 2020.

Due to Covid-19, the Government granted drivers a 6 month extension on their MOT tests from March 31st. As restrictions are being eased and more drivers are getting back on the roads, all vehicles that are due for an MOT from 1 August will be required to get it tested.

How The 6 Month MOT Test Extension Works

Your vehicle’s MOT expiry date will automatically be extended by 6 months if it’s eligible. This will be done just before it’s due to expire, however your vehicle must be ‘safe to drive’.

  • Your vehicle will still have a valid MOT certificate for an extra 6 months.
  • You can still tax your vehicle – you might need to wait to do this until later in the month if both your MOT and vehicle tax run out this month.
  • Your insurance will still be valid.
  • Your vehicle’s record will be updated so the police can see you have a valid MOT.

You will NOT get a new paper MOT certificate with a new expiry date on it.

But you are responsible for making sure your vehicle is always safe to drive (‘roadworthy’). It can be unsafe to drive even if you have a current MOT certificate.

MOT Extension

You can be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving and get 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

Although there is a very strict criteria for an MOT test our GX mechanics have come up with a quick and easy ‘safe to drive checklist’ for you to carry out in the comfort of your own driveway to make sure your vehicle is safe to drive.

If you are not confident in carrying out these checks yourself, while we are still open we are offering a ‘safe to drive’ check service to all customers to ensure your vehicle is road legal.
