Another glorious long weekend is approaching and the British Summer weather is currently on our side. If you are hitting the road for a staycation or a day trip this summer, make sure you have a hassle-free journey. 

Before heading off on your journey, take some time to go through the following tips to prevent any serious issues with your vehicle.

Are your wipers blades in good working condition?

Check your wiper blades for any tears or splits. If you’ve been experiencing a screeching sound from your wiper blades, you will need to get them replaced. Have you replaced your wiper blades in the last year? If not, we would advise you to replace them to ensure efficient performance. 

You should also ensure that your windscreen washer fluid is topped up and full for your journey. Did you know that your vehicle can fail an MOT test for not having any washer fluid? Your washer fluid should always be topped up. This means if you come across poor driving conditions your windscreen will not be covered and restrict your view.

Are your tyres safe to drive?

You should check all four tyres before setting off on any long journey, especially when the weather is warmer. This includes checking the general condition of your tyres for any obvious issues, as well as ensuring you have a spare tyre. Make sure to check that the tyre pressure is correct and the tread depth is legal. The current minimum legal tread depth for cars is 1.6mm.

Have you checked your fluid levels?

Before setting off you should check that all of your vehicles fluid levels are topped up or the correct level; this includes your engine oil and coolant fluid. If you are unsure of how to do this, either refer to your owner’s handbook or pop into our garage and our mechanics will be able to guide you and give you advice.

Are your MOT test and service up to date?

It is highly advised to book your MOT beforehand if it is due relatively close to your planned trip away. This is to avoid any issues with your vehicle and ensure that it is safe to drive. Although this may sound obvious, so many people would just risk not getting their vehicle tested until they have returned from their trip. Getting your car serviced and checked prior to your trip will help prevent any future problems that may cost you more money.
